Things You’ll Learn from Oscars 2014

“No matter where you're from your dreams are valid"

Oscars 2014 had been concluded.

Netizens all over the globe have expressed both their satisfaction and disappointment on the results of winners. Some have expressed their admiration, named their own best and even worst-dressed celebrities who absolutely did their best to glam-up for the highly-acclaimed awards event.  And while most of the stories have focused on these, I decided to focus on what seem to be relevant and applicable on our own daily lives -- life lessons which we can get from these highlights:

Lupita Nyong'o Bagging the Best Supporting Actress Award

To be honest, I am a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence and I was actually rooting for her to bag the award, not Lupita. I don’t know Lupita Nyong’o that much and I have yet to watch “12 Years a Slave” (well, just to see if she really deserves it). But then, I’ve come to realized that coming from being unknown to now a red-carpet darling, Lupita must be a big dreamer. A dreamer who kicked her ass off just so to deserve whatever she have right now.

True to that, a line from her acceptance speech only proves that she have dreamed big and did her best to pave way for getting the golden statue.
"When I look down at this golden statue, may it remind me and every little child that no matter where you're from your dreams are valid".
Having said this, indeed Lupita have put on light for all the dreamers. Lupita have taught us that you need not be that typical fair-skinned with blonde hair American Hollywood Celebrity just so to make it big. It doesn’t matter whether you are a Filipino, a Kenyan or any other individual coming from a 3rd world country, as long as you dream, not matter how big or small, and work hard for it to happen, then you can make it.

Yes, all our dreams are valid.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a person who came from city or province, big or small, fair or dark. As long you put your heart on your dream, dedicate your time and be passionate about it, then no doubt, your dream will be within your reach.

Leonardo Missed It Again.

Many have raised dismay upon announcement of the Academy Award’s Best Actor. Yes, Leonardo De Caprio missed it again and it is so heartbreaking.

We know for a fact that Leo is a great great actor. He have technically proved it in his movies and being a nominee  for several times. But for reasons even him probably cannot understand, he had never bagged the Oscars Award. Some say that the Academy is playing on him. While some say it is just so unfortunate that everytime he is nominated, his fellow frontrunner is just better than him.

I cannot speak for Leo himself. But I know that just like any other human being who keeps on working hard for his/ her dreams to realize, yet unfortunately things doesn’t seem to fall into place to make it happen is truly hard to grasp.

Just like Leo, we have also dreamed of probably getting an award, a trophy, or realistically a promotion, a raise or just a simple acknowledgement for a job well done.  I know that at certain point in our lives, everytime we missed our key goal, our dream, we end up doing either of these:
  • Keep on chasing it or
  • Giving up

What Leo did for the past years was to keep on chasing his Oscars. He did all his best to prove that he is worthy of the award. He had done this several times, becoming better than ever from each passing year yet still he wasn’t able to bag the trophy. And now I wonder, will he ever give up? Well, although it seems to be a tiring process, he doesn’t have to.

Leo need not an award to prove he is a great actor, everybody can attest that he is. Although the award signifies as a “proof” of him being a great actor, at the end of the day, he knows his worth. The viewers, the critics, knows what he is capable of as an actor. All he needs to do is to move on, go on with his life as an actor. And continue doing great movies with superb acting.

Time will come, for sure the right time will come where Leo will walk on that stage, hold that golden statue and say “At long last!”.

And so same goes to all of us.

We don’t need to rush onto things. As long as we know our worth, we know what we are capable of, we need not worry on the feasibility of achieving our goals.

I know it’s easier said than done, but the best option we can do in our lives is to keep on chasing our dreams.  You may come to point where giving up will look like as the best option, but then think of how far you have reached. Think of the sacrifices you have already made.  And then think again of your dream. Would you just want to forever let it go? Or would you want to reach to a point where you will say “it wasn’t a smooth-sailing journey, but hey, it was all worth-it, and I’m just glad that I made it!”.
